Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek: The Perfect Short Trek for Beginners & Families
One unforgettable sunrise, gentle trails and no extreme altitude — the friendliest big-view trek in Nepal.
If you want a real Himalayan trek but you're short on time, new to trekking, or travelling with children, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is the perfect introduction. In just a few days it delivers one of the most famous mountain sunrises on earth, without the extreme altitude of the bigger routes.
The famous sunrise
The highlight is the dawn climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m), where the sun rises over a panorama of giants — Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas and the fishtail summit of Machhapuchhre catching the first golden light. It is a moment that stays with travellers for life, and it's reached by a well-built trail, not a scramble.
Why it's great for beginners and families
- Short: typically 4–5 days on the trail
- Modest altitude — far lower AMS risk than EBC or the high passes
- Comfortable teahouses with good food throughout
- Beautiful rhododendron forest, especially in spring
- Easy to reach from Pokhara
The route
From Pokhara you drive to Nayapul or Ulleri and trek up through the Magung and Gurung villages to Ghorepani, the base for the Poon Hill sunrise. Many itineraries continue to the lovely village of Ghandruk before descending — giving a satisfying loop through classic Annapurna foothill scenery.
Best time
Spring brings blazing rhododendron blooms, while autumn offers the clearest skies. It's also a fine winter trek thanks to the relatively low elevation, though Poon Hill dawns are cold — bring a warm layer for that sunrise.
New to trekking or bringing the family? Poon Hill is the perfect first Himalayan adventure.
