Gokyo Lakes Trek: Turquoise Lakes & the Best View of Everest

A quieter, arguably more beautiful alternative to Everest Base Camp, ending at a string of holy turquoise lakes.

Many seasoned trekkers say the view of Everest from the top of Gokyo Ri is even better than the one from Kala Patthar on the classic Base Camp route. The Gokyo Lakes trek takes you up a parallel valley in the Everest region to a chain of six sacred, glacier-fed lakes that glow an unreal turquoise, all while crowds thin out. It is one of Nepal's most rewarding high treks.

The highlight: Gokyo Ri

The climax is the dawn climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), a viewpoint that reveals four of the world's six highest peaks at once — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu — with the vast Ngozumpa glacier, the longest in the Himalaya, sprawling below. The frozen lakes and the sunrise light on the giants make it unforgettable.

How long and how hard?

Plan for around 12 to 14 days, similar to Everest Base Camp, including the Lukla flight and acclimatisation days. It is a demanding high-altitude trek but non-technical. Fit trekkers who acclimatise properly manage it well, and it can be combined with Base Camp via the challenging Cho La pass for a bigger adventure.

Best time to go

As with the rest of the Everest region, autumn (October–November) and spring (March–May) offer the most stable weather and clearest views. The lakes are partly frozen and especially striking in late autumn. Winter is feasible but very cold at the lakes.
