The Ultimate Nepal Trekking Packing List
Pack light, pack smart. Here's exactly what to bring for a Himalayan trek — and what to leave behind.
Good packing is the difference between a comfortable trek and a miserable one. The golden rule in Nepal is layering: conditions swing from warm valley afternoons to freezing dawns at altitude in a single day. Here is a practical, field-tested list. Most gear can also be bought or rented affordably in Kathmandu's Thamel district if you'd rather travel light.
Clothing — the layering system
- Moisture-wicking base layers (top and bottom)
- Insulating mid-layer (fleece or light down)
- Warm down jacket for evenings and high camps
- Waterproof, breathable shell jacket and trousers
- Trekking trousers and a couple of quick-dry shirts
- Warm hat, sun hat, buff/neck gaiter and gloves
- Several pairs of proper trekking socks
Footwear
Sturdy, broken-in trekking boots with ankle support are the most important item you'll carry. Never trek in brand-new boots. Add a pair of lightweight camp shoes or sandals for the evenings, and gaiters if you're trekking in shoulder seasons with possible snow.
Sleeping and pack
- A four-season sleeping bag rated to around -10°C for high treks
- Daypack (25–35 L) for what you carry each day
- A larger duffel for your porter to carry (kept under the weight limit)
- Headtorch with spare batteries
- Reusable water bottles and a way to purify water
Health and documents
- Personal first-aid kit and any prescription medicines
- High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm — the sun is fierce at altitude
- Sunglasses with good UV protection
- Passport, permits, insurance details and passport photos
- Some cash in small notes for the trail
Don't overpack
Porters carry your main bag, but there are weight limits, and you'll appreciate a lighter load. Bring versatile items, do laundry along the way, and resist the urge to pack 'just in case' extras. If you forget something, Thamel has everything from down jackets to trekking poles at reasonable prices.
