Everest Three High Passes Trek: The Ultimate Khumbu Challenge
For experienced trekkers — the grand Khumbu circuit linking three 5,000 m+ passes, Base Camp and Gokyo.
If Everest Base Camp is the classic, the Three Passes trek is the masterpiece. This demanding loop links the three great high passes of the Khumbu — Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La, all above 5,300 m — and rolls Base Camp, Kala Patthar and the Gokyo Lakes into one epic journey. It is the most complete way to experience the Everest region.
The three passes
- Kongma La (5,535 m) — the highest of the three
- Cho La (5,420 m) — a glacier crossing linking Lobuche and Gokyo
- Renjo La (5,360 m) — stunning views back over the Gokyo valley
How hard is it?
This is a strenuous trek for experienced, fit hikers. It typically takes 18 to 20 days, involves long days on rough and sometimes icy ground, and demands excellent acclimatisation. Some sections near the passes require care with footing and the occasional use of trekking poles or basic crampons in snow. It is not a first trek — but for those ready, it is the trip of a lifetime.
Who it's for
Choose the Three Passes if you have done multi-day treks before, you are confident at altitude, and you want the fullest possible Everest experience away from the busiest sections of trail. A strong guide and a sensible, unrushed itinerary are essential here.
