Mardi Himal Trek: The Best Short Off-Beat Trek in Annapurna
Short, spectacular and still off the beaten track — Mardi Himal hugs a ridge right under Machhapuchhre.
If you want the close-up drama of the Annapurnas without the crowds or the time commitment of the bigger treks, Mardi Himal is the answer. This relatively new, off-beat route climbs a forested ridge to a high camp directly beneath the iconic fishtail peak of Machhapuchhre. It packs a lot of beauty into just a few days.
Why Mardi Himal
- Short — typically 4–6 days from Pokhara
- Quieter than the classic Annapurna trails
- Magnificent close views of Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South
- Beautiful rhododendron forest lower down, open ridge up high
- Moderate altitude — gentler than the high passes
The route
From Pokhara you drive to the trailhead and climb through dense forest to Forest Camp and Low Camp, then break out onto the open ridge to High Camp (around 3,580 m). An early push to the Mardi Himal viewpoint rewards you with a sweeping Annapurna panorama before you descend.
Best time and difficulty
Mardi Himal is a moderate trek suitable for fit beginners. Spring brings blazing rhododendrons; autumn brings the clearest skies. The ridge can be cold and exposed, so pack warm layers even on this shorter route.
Short on days but craving big Annapurna views? Mardi Himal is the perfect choice.
