Trekking in Nepal for Beginners: How to Choose Your First Trek
You don't need to be an athlete to trek in Nepal. Here's how to pick a first trek you'll love.
You do not need mountaineering experience or extreme fitness to trek in Nepal. With the right route and a good guide, a first-timer can stand among the highest mountains on earth and love every minute. The key is choosing a trek that matches your fitness and your time. Here is how.
What fitness do you really need?
If you can comfortably walk for four to six hours on consecutive days, you can do a beginner trek in Nepal. Some daily cardio and a few practice hikes in the months before you travel make it far more enjoyable. The challenge is steady effort and altitude, not speed or technical skill.
Best treks for beginners
- Ghorepani Poon Hill — short, famous sunrise, modest altitude
- Langtang Valley — close to Kathmandu, gentle profile, big scenery
- Mardi Himal — a quieter ridge trek with huge Annapurna views
- Ghandruk village loops — easy cultural walks in the foothills
What to expect on the trail
Most beginner treks are teahouse treks: you walk between villages and sleep in simple, friendly lodges with hot meals. Your guide sets a sensible pace and a porter carries your main bag, so you only walk with a light daypack. Days are unhurried, with plenty of time for tea, photos and views.
Our advice
Start with a 4–7 day teahouse trek at moderate altitude, go with a licensed guide, and don't rush. You'll finish wanting to come back for a bigger trek — and many of our travellers do exactly that.
